Jacklyn knew she had a passion for the medical field after providing home health care for family members with extended illnesses. She applied for Home Health Aide jobs, but did not qualify without a state license.
Jacklyn learned about the Goodwill A-STEP program when she applied to work at her local Goodwill Thrift Store. The A-STEP program helped Jacklyn enroll in a Certified Nursing Assistant program at Flagler Technical College.
Starting school and work was a significant step forward for Jacklyn who has overcome past adversity. She was a victim of domestic violence who moved to Florida to start a new life with her son and daughter, then transition into the workforce after a 20-year hiatus as a stay-at-home mom.
Jacklyn earned top grades in her class and received a college scholarship to cover part of her tuition. The clinical portion of her training was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She graduated one month late and participated in a Drive Through Graduation Parade to receive her diploma.
Jacklyn is now employed as a CNA at the medical facility where she completed her training and continues to work part-time at Goodwill. Jacklyn has taken the first step in her medical career with a long-term goal of obtaining her LPN and RN in the future.
